Ramnavami procession attacked, 16 hurt in Jharkhand

April 15, Ranchi

At least 16 people were injured when bombs were hurled at a procession held during the Hindu festival of Ramnavami in Jharkhand’s Ranchi district, the police said Tuesday.

Residents of Urguttu village in Pithoria block, around 60 km from the state capital here, took out a Ramnavami procession Monday night.

Nine bombs were hurled at the procession while it was passing through an area said to be dominated by members of another community, though only three of them exploded. Sixteen people, including four children, were injured in the blasts.

The victims have been admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) here. Four of then are reportedly in critical condition.

Tension prevailed in the area Tuesday and the paramilitary Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been deployed in the village.

Uneasy calm after clashes

Pithoria, April 15: The Pithoria police registered three FIRs against 450 unidentif- ied persons for rioting a day after 18 persons were injured in clashes over Ram Navami processions, but tension was palpable at Urguttu and Chandwe.

Hafiz-ur-Rahman, a resident of Katamkulli, Ganesh Mahto, a resident of Urguttu, and Shiva Sahu, all undergoing treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, lodged the FIRs.

Rahman sustained head injury, while Mahto is nursing wounds in leg. Sahu sustained bullet injury in right leg.

Even as inspector-general of police A.K. Sinha and deputy inspector-general Naresh Prasad Singh inspected the trouble-torn areas and gave necessary instructions to senior superintendent of police M.S. Bhatia, the situation was far from normal.

People were still divided and were ready to fight with each other. The police forces are camping in the areas to ward off any untoward incident.

At Chandwe, where Sahu had sustained bullet injury last night, the situation was most delicate. People were ready to fight on the issue of Ram Navami procession passing through a land adjacent to a graveyard.

At Urguttu, where anti-social elements had hurled bomb at a Ram Navami procession yesterday, majority of the shops remained closed today and people appeared divided on communal lines, accusing each other of disturbing the peace of the area.

Superintendent of police (rural) Mohammed Nehal, however, said that the situation was under control.
