SIMI targets VHP leaders

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders, Praveen Togadia, Babu Bajrangi and Munna Bajrangi, are on the hitlist of SIMI operatives, a SIMI activist during an interrogation informed cops.

Kamruddin Nagori, a SIMI activist an accused in the serial bomb blast case that rocked Ahmedabad, during his narco-analysis test. During the test, conducted at the Hyderabad laboratory, Nagori also said that senior politicians L K Advani, Uma Bharati and Atal Behari Vajyapee were not targeted by SIMI.

Talking to MiD DAY, Praveen Togadia said he did not have any idea that he was on the SIMI hitlist. “I am not aware of anything but I am also not afraid of anyone. They can prepare any list they want, I am not concerned,” he said.

Nagori, arrested along with his brother Safdar Nagori, general secretary of SIMI and 13 others from Madhya Pradesh on March 13, has revealed that SIMI women operatives had been inactive since 2003.  Nagori also said that SIMI did not have any links with the LTTE of Sri Lanka, HUJI and the Harkat- ul- jamat. However, they had contacts with the Jamat- e- Islam of Bangladesh and the Lashkar-e-Toiba.

Choral Camp
During the interrogations, Nagori has disclosed that the SIMI had organised a camp at Choral that was attended by about 21 members from Khandwa, Jharkand, Madhya Pradesh, UP, Kerela and Mumbai. In the camp, the members were taught aiming and shooting using seven country-made pistols, which they had purchased at Rs 5,500 each. Nagori had prepared six petrol bombs and displayed these to the participants to train them in bomb making. Nagori said he had to teach his cadre how to use petrol bombs as they did not have other weapons to fight back.

Recruiting youths
According to Nagori, at one such meeting in Ujjian, another SIMI operative, Etheysham, attended the meeting and they discussed the poor performance of SIMI and the loss of motivation among its members. The meeting was concluded with the decision to recruit more boys and to increase the manpower for field jobs.

Training
The 21 members participating in the Choral camp were given 12-15 masks while climbing trees to hide their identities. Gloves were used while practising firing so that the members wouldn’t leave their fingerprints on the weapons.

Hand grenades
The members attending the Choral camp wanted to learn about hand grenades and Nagori was assigned the job of procuring them. The members wanted to be able to prepare hand grenades within a year’s time and also purchase chemicals to produce bombs.

Doctors role
Also during the training, a medical student by the name of Dr Faisal from Indore was present in the camp and was assigned to provide first aid in the camp.

Funds
Nagori disclosed that funds donated to the Tanzeem, Madrasa and the SIMI were used to pay lawyers and secure bail for arrested SIMI members. Nagori revealed that he had paid a lawyer Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 for securing the bail of the Khandawa SIMI members. In Bhopal, Nagori had rented a house and used it as their office.

Targets
A Mouser brought from Bhuranpur was to be used in eliminating targets in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Conference
A conference of the SIMI, Idaga ul Har conference was held in Malayasia and attended by members from Malaysia, Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Palestine.

Anil Kumar, inspector general, Madhya Pradesh police, said that he did not have any idea why Nagori targeted VHP leaders and police officials. He said that they were investigating the case. However, the cop refused to divulge anything more about the report. “The narco-analysis report is confidential and I cannot divulge the details.”
