AHMEDABAD: The metropolitan court on Wednesday admitted a complaint against Shahi Imam of the Delhi Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, for making an inflammatory speech in connection with the arrest of accused in the serial blasts case.

Magistrate NM Karodia admitted the complaint against the religious leader and kept further proceeding on September 30, when the court will conduct an inquiry into the case. This inquiry is necessary for a metropolitan court because the place of alleged offence doesn’t fall in the court’s jurisdiction, which is Ahmedabad. The Imam had objected to the arrest of Abdul Bashar Kasmi by Gujarat police at a conference organised in New Delhi on August 1.

The complainant -Bachubhai Rambhia, manager of Gitaben Rambhia Smruti Ahimsa Trust – moved an application on September 2 in the metropolitan court against Bukhari for saying that Bashar was innocent and he was falsely implicated in the case. The Imam also said that the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was not responsible for the increasing terror strikes, but the police should also look into the role played by Hindu outfits like Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal.

He also reportedly expressed apprehension that the country may witness 1947-like agitation, if those arrested in the blasts case are not released. Talking in a conference against terrorism organised by the Jama Masjid United Forum last month, the Imam made a scathing attack on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi accusing him for having unleashed state-sponsored terrorism in Gujarat.

In his complaint, Rambhia claimed that Imam’s speech was aimed at creating rift between the two communities and he being a Hindu was deeply felt hurt with what the Imam had said.

The court admitted the complaint after Rambhia made a statement before the court in support of his complaint.
