Kolkata: Close on the heels of the beheading of a man for marrying a girl outside his religion at a village in Murshidabad district, another man was set on fire by his in-laws on Friday at Anarpur in North 24-Parganas district for the same reason.

With severe burns, Arka Banerjee (22), a resident of Barasat’s Chowdhurybagan, is now struggling for life in Barasat district hospital, superintendent of police of North 24-Parganas district Supratim Sarkar said here on Saturday.

Arka met Rehana Sultana during frequent trips to Baduria where his uncle stayed. Later they fell in love and got married in 2006 at a marriage registrar’s office.

Apprehending opposition from his family, Arka rented a house at Haora, away from his parents, and did odd jobs to earn his living.

However, the girl’s family members traced the couple to Haora after a year and brought Rehana and her one-year-old son to Anarpur, while Arka was threatened with dire consequence if he returned to Baduria.

Early on Friday, when Arka tried to enter his in-laws’ house to get his wife and baby back, he was severely beaten up. Later Rehana’s brother Monirul allegedly took out a tin of kerosene, poured it on him and set him on fire.

Some local people later rescued him by pouring water to douse the flames. He was then admitted to a local hospital and subsequently shifted to Barasat district hospital.

Arka’s brother in-law Monirul was on Saturday arrested by the police on the basis of a statement by Arka at the hospital bed, the SP said.

BASIRHAT/BEHRAMPORE: A youth was allegedly set ablaze by his in-laws for marrying outside his community. The incident happened in Baduria’s Anarpur on Thursday. Arka Banerjee (22) is fighting for life in hospital.

Arka, a resident of Barasat’s Chowdhurybagan, met Rehana Sultana during frequent trips to Baduria, where his uncle stayed. They fell in love and married in 2006 at a marriage registrar’s office. Knowing very well that both families would oppose the marriage, Arka decided not to stay with his parents, who broke all ties with him. The young couple rented a single-room home at Haroa, North 24-Parganas. Arka took up odd jobs to make a living. The girl’s family members had vowed that they would bring her back and “punish the boy”. The couple had a son, Aryan.

The girl’s family members traced the couple to Haroa a year later. Arka was allegedly kept at gunpoint while her family members took her away to Anarpur. The family also took away the child, now a year old. Arka was threatened with dire consequences if he ever set foot in Baduria. Arka too swore that he would get his wife back one day. Since then he had made several attempts to get her back but failed each time.

The latest attempt was made on Thursday night. Since 10 pm, Arka was trying to enter his in-laws’ place. It took him more than two and a half hours before he could step inside the house. Police suspect that Rehana knew Arka would come to get her and that the information had leaked out to her family members.

Arka was beaten up. Rehana’s brother Monirul allegedly took out a can of kerosene, poured it on him and then set him on fire. The main door was opened and Arka was thrown out. By then, his entire body was in flames. Local residents were horrified at seeing a flaming figure running down the street. Arka was trying to reach a nearby pond. Local residents had, by then, gathered in large numbers. Some of them poured water on him to douse the fire. He was taken to Baduria rural hospital. The locals informed the Baduria police on Friday morning. A critically injured Arka was later shifted to the Barasat district hospital.

Basirhat SDPO Subrata Ganguly recorded his statement later in the evening. “Based on his statement, we will arrest the culprits,” said Ganguly. Police sources said that Monirul has denied all charges. Arka’s family members have not gone to the hospital to see him. “We have severed all ties with him. We knew something of this kind will happen to him,” said Chandi Banerjee, his father.

The incident comes a day after three people were arrested in Murshidabad’s Lakshmanpur for beheading a youth from Bihar who had married a girl from another community. The Behrampore police arrested 27 persons in connection with the killing on Friday evening — all of whom were present at the kangaroo court that condemned the man. The man had recently come to the Murshidabad village to stay with his in-laws. The couple also had a son. The kangaroo court was held on July 14 and the youth went missing since that day. His beheaded body was recovered three days later. Also, the court threatened everyone with dire consequences if they revealed the judgment to anyone. A special team, headed by Behrampore police station inspector-in-charge Arun Das, has been formed to probe the case. The body is still at the Behrampore police morgue, as his family is yet to be contacted.

“We are going to take stern action against the killers. Raids will continue till we nab all of them,” said Debasis Bej, ASP Murshidabad.
