2 RSS men stabbed at hospital premises

Express News Service, 16 Mar 2009

KANNUR: Tension prevailed in Kannur town and adjacent coastal villages as two RSS men sustained stab injuries in clashes with NDF activists on Sunday afternoon.

RSS worker Sayuj, stabbed at Adikadalayi following an altercation with an alleged group of NDF activists, was taken to the Government District hospital. NDF and RSS workers clashed on the hospital premises, worsening the situation.

Another RSS worker, Sasankan, was stabbed by a couple of NDF activists in the clash.

Both the RSS workers, whose injuries were serious, were then taken to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, the clashes continued on the district hospital premises.

There were not many policemen present in the hospital vicinity as most of them were on duty in the violence-racked Panur region. Attempts made by a group of people to block the hospital gates were however foiled by the police.

Even as tension mounted at the hospital, around 10 shops in front of the Kannur railway station were attacked by an unidentified group of youths who came on motorbikes.

Traders and the local people blocked vehicles on the roads in protest against the failure of the police to tackle the violence. Most shops downed their shutters either out of fear or in protest.

District Collector Dinesh Arora told to The New Indian Express that he had ‘sought’ measures to strengthen deployment of police personnel in the area.

Most cops were posted at Panur and surrounding areas in Thalassery.

The district authorities were taking all measures to restore peace and the “higher authorities had been informed of the situation,” the Collector said.
