The ‘dangerous’ Orkut profiles of Surat rapists

NEW DELHI, INIDA: ‘Risk is my business, danger is my game. Don’t play with me’, proclaims the Orkut profile, which reportedly belongs to Tariq Saiyad, one of the three young men accused of gang-raping a schoolgirl in Surat on Friday.
The profile details, and the kind of ‘friends’ the accused have, give a clear picture of the young men, who hunted down young girls using social networking sites, apart from prowling the streets for victims.
But the Surat rape case, where the trio raped a school girl in a car, gave a twist to their tale. The aspiring models who enticed many a girl via the social networking platform are now getting brickbats upon brickbats.
“He should be castrated,” reads one hate message, while another netizen proclaims death sentence to the alleged rapists. “You should be stoned to death,” says the scrap.
“I wish that would have happened to one of your family girls. Then you would realise what rape is,” wrote Hetal, one of Tariq’s close friends on Orkut.
Another user said he has done this with many girls. “He has not did wid only 1 girl, he did wid many girls, gang rape, same type, in car only,” reads the scrap from King of king. The same user has put another scrap on Sahil’s Orkut page saying that the trio has raped seven girls.
The fathers of the accused duo serve in the police force and it was alleged that they were shielding their sons from the repercussions of their alleged misdeeds. But the e-courts have proclaimed death sentences to the accused.
“Court should surrender this kind of criminal to the public, they know very well what to do with this kind of criminal…… we should cut his pe*** in front of that girl in public place, so nobody will have guts to do this again…,” writes an Orkutian identified as King of the king.
Most of the comments, in Hindi, Gujarati and English use all the swearwords and more to give vent to their anger.
Saiyed Shahid also has got many online slaps. “First of all u can’t be Saiyed as Saiyed caste is one of Highest caste in Muslim. You are not even Human forget about being Muslim… you should be punished by ISLAMIC LAW , u don’t need fast track court stuff,” reads one scrap.
Sahil, a common friend of Shahid and Tariq, is flooded with dozens of messages from other Orkutians requesting him to stay away from the rapists, who also also allegedly filmed this gang rape act with mobile camera.
Whatever be the verdict of the court, netizens are clear in their verdict – a criminal deserves to be punished.

Ahmedabad blasts terrorists were brainwashed with Iraq, Babri, Gujarat riots

Posted by jagoindia on February 12, 2009

‘Brainwashed with Iraq, Babri, Gujarat riots’
Kamaal Saiyed, Feb 11, 2009

Surat: Tears streaming down his face, his hands trembling, the man who allegedly led the serial bombing of Ahmedabad that killed 58 and injured over 200 last July claimed he was brainwashed and ensnared into doing what he did by radical Islamist handlers.
Qayamuddin Kapadia, 28, of the Indian Mujahideen — prime accused in the Ahmedabad blasts and a key suspect in the Surat bomb-planting as well as in the Delhi blasts — spoke exclusively to The Indian Express in the custody of Surat police today.

The plan to carry out the Ahmedabad blasts and the planting of 29 live bombs in Surat, Kapadia said, was firmed up in January 2008 at a clandestine meeting of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in Halol in Vadodara.

But that was only a culmination of earlier meetings, including a SIMI meeting that he attended in Kerala in August 2006. Among those who led the crucial Halol meeting was SIMI General Secretary Safdar Nagori whom the Madhya Pradesh police arrested in March last year, Kapadia said.

If Kapadia is to be believed, his transformation from an ordinary Muslim youth with ordinary dreams and a loving family to look after to one of the country’s top Terror accused, is a tale of intense indoctrination.

It started with Kapadia, a deeply religious youth, meeting up with Sajid Mansuri, the SIMI hardliner and a qualified engineer who is also in police custody now for the Ahmedabad blasts. His journey to terror began in a closed little room in Vatva.

“I met Sajid Mansuri during December 2007, we soon became friends. Both he and I were privately doing Islamic propagation work in Vadodara, and we began getting much closer to each other. Some time later, he introduced me to Abdul Subhan alias Tauqeer in a room in Vatva area where Maulana Abubashar (another key accused in the blasts) and a few other youths were there. Later, Sajid Mansuri left the place and we stayed with Tauqeer.”

Tauqeer, says Kapadia, would hold a Majlis (meetings) with them thrice a day in that room. “We were not allowed to go out even to the mosques for prayers, we were told to pray inside that room.”

The Majlis sessions were intense, appealing strongly to the religious, emotional and intellectual sentiments of the captive audience. “Each Majlis would start with the recitation of the holy Quran verses by Maulana Abu Bashar. Then Taqueer would begin by reminding us about the war sanctioned by the holy Prophet to save Islam in this world. The topic would then gradually shift to the current situation of Muslims the world over — we would be made to believe Muslims everywhere are being tortured and and murdered, giving many examples, like that of Palestine and the torture of innocent Iraqi Muslims by US soldiers.”

Then the speakers would turn closer home. “They would keep reminding us about the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the 2002 Gujarat riots. They would show us photographs of dead bodies of Muslim women and children burnt and brutally killed in communal violence”, Kapadia recalled.

“From among us, they selected enthusiastic youths who are both physically and mentally strong, and loyal to their ideology. They relentlessly kept convincing us that someone from the community should take revenge and kill people of particular community. I was one of the few Taqueer selected, and he he kept me with him for three months.”

The recruits were kept isolated. “They didn’t allow us to meet even our family members. During Majlis, they would explain to us the meaning of verses from the Quran and interpret those to convince us that we must take revenge and give a proper retaliation to persecution. Later, I came to know that the particular volumes of Quran that they had used to read out and interpret meanings was different from what is found in the market.”

Kapadia remained in Tauqeer’s company for three months from April 2008 and visited different places in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. According to Kapadia, Taqueer spoke fluent English, regularly read English newspapers, and kept watching international news on TV. “He would particularly look for news of the torture of Muslims in the other countries. Taqueer wanted to keep everything secret and had warned Kapadia not to disclose his working style even to Sajid Mansuri, he said.

Weeks went by, and soon came July 26, when the bombs they planted in Ahmedabad left a trial of blood and gore. Three months of desperate hide-and-seek with the law and then Kapadia was picked up from Indore.

“Main sirf ek baat kehna chahta hoon un Muslim ladkon se jo abhi tak in logon ki giraft mein nahin aye hain. Yeh log aapko Muslimon par huwe zulm ke photo dikhakar aur kaumwad ki batein sunakar aapko emotional karke apni taraf attract karte hain. Aur desh virodhi kaam karne ke liye uksate hain.” (I want to convey only one message to Muslim youths who haven’t been ensnared yet. They will show you photos and tell you stories of torture on Muslims and make you emotional. They will then convince you to carry out anti-national activities.)

Kapadia broke down saying he has lost all touch with his elderly parents, his wife and his small daughter and they have no one to take care of them.

No houses for Muslims: Surat real estate agents

Posted by jagoindia on December 12, 2008

Terror gets local support, so no houses for Muslims: Surat real estate agents
Kamaal Saiyed, Dec 11, 2008

SURAT: Claiming Terror strikes like in Mumbai cannot take place without local support or contacts, Surat real estate agents and brokers have decided not to rent or sell houses to Muslims.

This decision was taken at a meeting last Sunday which was attended by some 300 real estate agents, many of whom responded to SMS invites. They initiated moves to form an association, hoping to complete the process before the month ends.

The Mumbai attacks prompted this meeting in Surat which was rocked by the discovery of bombs across the city after the July 26 serial blasts in Ahmedabad. After the bombs were discovered, activists of Hindu hardline groups had forced Muslims to vacate shops in the Varachha area of Surat — in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, Muslims find it very difficult to rent or buy houses and this has been their experience ever since the 2002 riots.

Defending their move not to do business with Muslims in Surat, New Adajan Rander Road real estate agent Amit Tailor said: “We do business for a fixed rate. I have contacts with 150 estate brokers and we are all inter-linked. We cannot rule out the possibility of local support for terror attacks. Several local people were involved in the blasts in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, even the planting of bombs in Surat. We are not saying that all Muslims are terrorists. There are some shops in our area which have been rented out by Muslims. We want to control the percentage.”

Naresh Patel, also an Adajan estate agent, said: “We will convince owners who have rented shops to Muslims to get them vacated. If they don’t do it, they will be responsible if anything happens. We want to control the percentage of Muslims with properties and shops in our areas. All real estate agents and brokers are with us, they have all taken an oath not do business with Muslims.”

Praveen Bhalara of Varachha said: “We found that one Tanveer Pathan was arrested by Surat police in connection with the planting of bombs in Varachha. Tanveer used to work in an AC shop in Varachha and was familiar with the area. So we decided that shops should not be sold or given on rent to Muslims as they pose a threat. We don’t want to take a chance. We have even told groups in Varachha not to give jobs to Muslims youths.”

When his comments were sought, Surat Mayor Ranjit Gilitwala, who is also the BJP MLA from Surat East, said though he was not aware of any such decision by real estate agents, he could do very little about it at an official level. For the sake of communal harmony in the city, Gilitwala said, he would call real estate agents and speak to them.

Indian Mujahideen’s plan to destroy India and establish Islamic rule

Posted by jagoindia on November 20, 2008

IM aimed to tarnish integrity of India’
http://www.thestatesman.net/
AHMEDABAD, Nov. 19: The banned outfit Simi was rechristened as Indian Mujahideen (IM) by its active members who aimed to disintegrate India as a nation by conducting serial blasts in the city, says the chargesheet filed by the police in the 26 July serial blast case.
IM members accused in the serial bomb blast case also wanted to damage India’s secular character and avenge demolition of Babri Masjid and killing of people from the minority community during the 2002 post-Godhra riots, the 2000-page chargesheet, a copy of which is with PTI, said.

They wanted to establish Islam in India and for that they would go to any extent, including mass killing or target killing, create an atmosphere of fear among the people and instigate communal tension, the chargesheet filed in connection with the blasts at the city civil hospital and LG hospital said.

It said the serial bomb blasts in Hindu areas of the city and planting of bombs in Surat city was part of a conspiracy hatched by the IM members so that people lose faith in the constitutionally elected government in Gujarat.

Twenty six accused have been named in the chargesheet which was filed last week before metropolitan magistrate G M Patel here. 59 people have been named as absconders in the chargesheet. Eight people altogether have been arrested. n PTI

Muslim cop who allegedly helped SIMI extremists, facing dismissal

Posted by jagoindia on August 31, 2008

Cop who played SIMI conduit in 2001, faces dismissal charges
Syed Khalique Ahmed
Friday , August 29, 2008

Ahmedabad, August 28 Police constable Haneef Hashim Multani (47) is facing dismissal charges for allegedly helping and providing shelter to SIMI activists during a 2001 meeting in Surat. Multani was last posted at the Rajkot Police Headquarters. The police have now served him a notice and asked as to why his services should not be dismissed.

Rajkot police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha, before whom Multani appeared in person and made verbal submissions in reply to the notice, is likely to pronounce his verdict within a fortnight as per departmental rules.

“The case is now in its final stages and an order is likely to be issued in the next 20 days,” Sinha told Newsline over the phone from Rajkot. At present, Multani is under suspension and withdrawing 75 per cent of his salary as per government rules.

Multani was posted in the Surat Traffic Police when the SIMI organised an educational awareness meeting in the city. The police raided the Rajshree Hall, the venue of the meet even before the meeting began on suspicions that a conspiracy was being hatched there.

The police arrested as many as 123 people belonging to SIMI from the venue. Multani, who had managed to escape, was subsequently arrested, suspended and put in jail for five months.

SIMI activists had said it was an educational awareness meet organised by the All India Minority Education Board. Elsewhere, the court released all the accused, including a university professor, on bail, as the police were unable to recover any incriminating material from their possession.

Multani too was granted bail by the court and reinstated, but transferred to Rajkot. But he did not join for two years and when he finally resumed duty, he was posted to the Rajkot City Police Headquarters, which is generally considered a ‘punishment posting’.

Later, a departmental inquiry was initiated against him for unauthorised absence from duty for 782 days, including the days spent in incarceration.

Treating the charges against him “as proved,” the presiding officer submitted his report to Sinha and the latter issued a dismissal notice, along with a suspension order, four months ago. Sinha said he was aware of the matter and will now take a decision on the report as he has heard the contention of the constable as well.

Sinha further said that while many policemen, including constables, sub-inspectors and inspectors, even in the local Intelligence Bureau are allowed to grow beards, Multani apparently did not seek such permission.

SIMI behind Ahmedabad serial blasts, mastermind Muslim cleric caught

Posted by jagoindia on August 16, 2008

SIMI behind Ahmedabad serial blasts, mastermind caught: Gujarat police
Zeenews Bureau

Ahmedabad, Aug 16: The Gujarat police on Saturday confirmed that they have arrested the mastermind behind the July 26 Ahmedabad serial blasts. Addressing a press conference in Ahmedabad, state DGP P C Pandey said that the mastermind  Mufti Abu Bashir, a SIMI activist  was arrested on Saturday morning in Uttar Pradesh’s capital, Lucknow.

Apart from Abu Bashir, who hails from Azamgarh, nine other SIMI activists have been arrested in connection with the serial blasts in Ahmedabad and the planting of live bombs in Surat, Pandey said.

The DGP also said that the Indian Mujahidden terror group, which had claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad blasts, was none other than the hard-line faction of the banned SIMI organisation. The police said that SIMI junked the Indian part of its name so that it became SIM, ‘Student Islamic Movement’ with global aspirations. It later took out the ‘Student’ from its name so that it was left with ‘IM,’ which was re-christened in ‘Indian Mujahideen.’

Pandey told mediapersons here that the Ahmedabad crime branch and the state Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), along with local intelligence units, had “nearly solved” the serial bombings in Ahmedabad as well as about 11-12 others including those in Jaipur, Bangalore, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Pandey further said that Abu Bashir was arrested by two teams — one each from the Gujarat police and the Uttar Pradesh police and will be brought to Gujarat soon.

About 40-50 cadres of the banned organisation had participated in extensive training in the jungles of Kerala. They were trained in Jungle warfare, rock climbing, swimming etc, the police said.

He further added that prior to the Ahmedabad and Surat blasts, Abu Bashir organised camps in Gujarat during April 2008 where they charted out the plan of Ahmedabad and Surat blasts.

He further informed that one Zahid Seikh played an important role in arranging car bombs.

Without ruling out the involvement of locals, he said that a lot of outsiders were involved in the blasts.

He also claimed to have busted many sleeper cells of the banned SIMI across the state.

In an eye raising discloser, the DGP said that most of the arrested were well educated. One terrorist, who hails from Mumbai, even worked in Wipro, said the police. But he was not able to provide other concrete details, as the person was still at large.

According to the DGP, SIMI had a role in all the major blasts that shook the country in the past few years, including in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jaipur, Maharashtra and Hyderabad. The Gujarat police has leads which will lead them to those behind the blasts in other states, he added.

According to Pandey, live bombs found in Surat failed to go off due to faulty chips.

Ruing the media’s role during the terrorist attacks, Pandey said, “It is very unfortunate that media sometimes over excitedly and unknowingly project things in such a way that helps terrorists and gives them boost. Sometimes Police do not divulge things that will affect the investigation.”

Bashir masterminded serial blasts: Police
NDTV Correspondent
Saturday, August 16, 2008, (Ahmedabad)The Gujarat Police have arrested 10 people in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts. The police have claimed that Mufti Abul Bashir who has been arrested from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh is the mastermind behind the Ahmedabad blasts. The police have also uncovered a network of SIMI activists involved in the blasts.

“The investigations were done along with other state police networks,we believe that SIMI network is behind the blasts,” said the police.

Mufti the mastermind behind the blasts is a SIMI activist according to the police. The police also said that they have got valuable information about other blasts and leads to the email through which the blast warning was sent. 2 of the arrested have connections with Lashkar-e-Taiba.

“SIMI activists are imparted extensive training in such activities, Hizbul Mujahideen is just another face of SIMI,” said the Gujarat police.

Before the blasts, the suspects held several meetings in Vadodara and Ahmedabad.

According to sources, a meeting was held at the place of SIMI activist Yunus in Ahmedabad. The explosives, which were assembled in Ahmedabad, were procured from outside the city.

At least 56 people were killed in the 21 blasts that hit Ahmedabad. The blasts were of low-intensity and considered similar to the ones that exploded in Bangalore on July 25.

Azamgarh link
The police have also released the photo of a man arrested in Azamgarh in UP in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts.

He’s been identified as Abul Bashar Ilahi. He was a teacher in a madarsa in Hyderabad and was visiting his village. His family has denied that he had any link to the Ahmedabad blasts.

NDTV correspondents have covered the story all around the country and intelligence sources have told NDTV that there was intricate plan behind the blasts.

The plot
A training camp was held at Ernakulam from December 8-10, 2007 and again in first week of January 2008.

According to sources 20 students from Hubli, Belgaum and Bangalore attended this camp.

They were trained under SIMI Chief Safdar Nagori.

Here they were taught how to assemble explosives with easily available materials by bomb expert Altaf Subhan.

Intelligence agencies believe at least some of those trained here were involved in the Jaipur blasts. End

Terrorists aim to economically cripple India

Posted by jagoindia on August 5, 2008

Terrorists aim to economically cripple India
30 Jul, 2008, 0438 hrs IST, ET Bureau

NEW DELHI: Eighteen bombs in Surat, 16 blasts in Ahmedabad and the one that was diffused, and 9 blasts in Bangalore — the aim was as much to create an atmosphere of fear as to dent India’s economic prosperity.

While fear could be perpetrated by striking just about any city or town in the country, economic destabilisation would only be possible by striking at commercial centres. This, then, explains the choice of targets: Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Surat, all in quick succession.

Experts suggest that terrorists have, through repeated strikes, managed to undermine the country’s intelligence set-up. They are now changing tack to target the country’s economy. The understanding being that the impact would be more lethal. The strikes in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and the abortive attempts in Surat only seem to confirm this change of tack.

Both, Karnataka and Gujarat, have emerged as investment destinations. While Karnataka, especially Bangalore, has been the destination for investment for a while especially in terms of IT and biotech investments, Gujarat, through its remarkable growth, has become a favourable destination for investment in manufacturing and power over the last five years.

Industrial production in Gujarat grew at 12.6% between 2003 and 2008. Investments in the state are to the tune Rs 5.62 trillion and memoranda of understanding for another Rs 6.5 trillion worth of investments have been signed. The state received foreign direct investment to the tune of $5 billion between 1991 and 2007.

The state government is currently working on a new policy, which the Gujarat chief minister hopes to take to international investors ahead of the global investors summit in January. The focus is on agri-businesses, textiles, gems and jewellery, mineral-based industries and ship building. It is this economic growth that has now become the focus of terrorist attack.

It is more than just creating and sustaining a climate of terror that is driving the choice of strikes that the terrorists are making. Security experts say that terrorists are choosing commercial hubs to undermine economic activity and to destroy India’s attractiveness as a destination for foreign investors. Such an understanding is not far fetched. Security analysts like B Raman, the former chief of the Research and Analysis Wing, have drawn parallels to the situation in Pakistan in 1990s, when continued terror strikes in Karachi created a feeling of insecurity among foreign investors, resulting in their subsequent withdrawal. While it is early days yet, continuous blasts in such short span would lead to rethinking by domestic and foreign investors on the desirability of their investments.

If the strikes in Bangalore and Ahmedabad indicate an attempt by terrorists to undermine the country’s economy, then the abortive attempt in Surat only serves to confirm this. Surat is India’s best known diamond trading centre. But Surat city and district is more than just a textile and gems and jewellery centre.

Surat accounts for 20% of large projects commissioned in the state and projects worth Rs 25,220 crore are being implemented. The district has attracted investments worth Rs 28,648 crore, second only to Jamnagar. It is one of the top five districts of the 25 districts in the state of Gujarat in terms of economic performance. Surat is more than its diamond and textile businesses, it is an industrial centre — ABG Shipping, Essar Steel, Essar Power, Royal Dutch Shell, L&T, Reliance Industries and NTPC all have bases in Surat. Not only that, Surat is home to the country’s key LNG terminal which is located in Hazira. Suddenly, a terror strike in Surat takes on a whole new complexion.

Security analysts say that the trend towards undermining India’s economic prosperity became evident from the blasts in Jaipur in May this year. The city is an important destination for tourists, with as many as 1.2 million foreign tourists visiting the city each year.

The attempt is to create a situation of insecurity that would not only impact the people who live in these areas but its economy as well. While local people have no option to take these terror strikes in their stride, investors will think twice before putting their money in places which are prone to terror strikes.

Surat was main target of Islamic terrorists: ATS

Posted by jagoindia on August 4, 2008

Surat was main target: ATS
By S. Hussain Zaidi
Mumbai

Aug. 2: The investigations of the Gujarat police, the intelligence agencies and the Mumbai anti-terrorist squad reveal that the terrorists who planted the bombs came from Maharashtra and that the Surat bombs were planted a day before the perpetrators sneaked into Ahmedabad to plant bombs.

It has emerged that Surat was actually the prime target and Ahmedabad a secondary target, ATS sources said. Over 23 bombs were planted in Surat, while nine exploded in Ahmedabad. After detailed examinations of the timer devices in Surat, investigators have found that they were set to explode simultaneously with those in Ahmedabad. The Surat bombs were deliberately set for delayed action as the bombers wanted to buy time to reach Ahmedabad. It is another story that the Ahmedabad bombs detonated while the Surat bombs failed and were discovered by the public.

Initial investigations had shown that the bombers had links to Mumbai as the cars used for the Ahmedabad blasts were stolen from Navi Mumbai. But the threatening email, too, drew the attention of the investigators. “The clue lies in the 14-page email they sent which has several references to incidents in Mumbai and other parts of the state,” said a senior ATS official.
