Man gets jail for killing pregnant cow in Delhi

Sunday, November 09, 2008, (New Delhi)Stabbing a neighbour’s pregnant cow to death has proved costly for a bakery owner as a Delhi court has sentenced him to one year prison term for the offence.

Naseem Khan, 25, who used to run a bakery in south Delhi, took out a knife and inflicted three stab wounds to the bovine after she devoured some materials from his shop. The cow died on the spot.

The court held Khan guilty under Section 429 (mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming or rendering useless any elephant, camel or horse) of the IPC.

“It is held that the prosecution has succeeded to prove its case against the accused beyond the shadow of reasonable doubt and that he gave blows to the cow, which caused her death,” a Metropolitan Magistrate said.

The court rejected his plea for leniency on the grounds that he has old parents and a child to look after. He also sought leniency on the ground that he had no past criminal records.

It also relied upon the statement of Vir Singh, the complainant, alleging that the accused had stabbed his pregnant cow on May 20, 2001 as she entered Khan’s bakery at Sangam Vihar in New Delhi.

Khan was duly identified by the complainant during the trial as the accused, the court noted, adding that he was also not cross-examined by the defence.

“It is a settled law if the witness is not cross-examined on any point, his testimony is deemed to be accepted by the accused,” the court said.

Khan’s plea for implication in the case was also dismissed by the court, saying that there was no record of any enmity between the complainant and the accused.

The cow’s injuries were also corroborated by the doctor who conducted the autopsy, prompting the court to award a prison term of one year to Khan.

Shoot Goa temple desecrators: Congress
November 8th, 2008 – 4:46 pm ICT by IANS –

Panaji, Nov 8 (IANS) The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has advocated shoot-at-sight orders in order to curb the rising incidents of desecration of religious structures in the state. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and the home minister were present at the GPCC executive committee meeting, which took place Friday evening, after yet another series of temple desecrations in South Goa.

“We have demanded that the chief minister should issue shoot-at-sight orders for these temple desecrators,” said party president Subhash Shirodkar, adding that some “forces” were trying to communally divide the people of Goa.

Goa’s temple desecration mystery deepened further, as three more idols were vandalized Friday, a few days after the Goa police Crime Branch claimed to have made a breakthrough.

Agitated villagers from the Quepem region in South Goa brought traffic to a standstill Friday when they learnt that the Sateri temple and two other shrines were vandalized at Kalsai, Dabhal Friday.

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rohitdas Patre said that the police had detained four people in connection with the case.

“We are interrogating them. They were picked up from the jungles in the vicinity of the religious structure,” Patre told reporters.

Crime branch officials also visited the site and interrogated the detained persons.

Earlier this week, the crime branch which had been entrusted with the case had claimed to have achieved a major breakthrough, with the arrest of 25-year-old Razak Sheikh, a resident of South Goa. He was arrested after desecration of another temple at Paroda, also in South Goa.

Police claim to have found Razak’s identity card at the temple site. The Crime branch Special Investigating Team (SIT) which is handling the case had claimed that this was a major breakthrough in the series of incidents involving vandalisation of churches and temples in the state.

This year alone has seen about 20 such incidents. The state administration has announced an award of Rs.100,000 for any credible information about the perpetrators.

In October the Bharatiya Janata Party-sponsored outfit, the Mandir Suraksha Samiti, had called for a state-wide shutdown in protest against the state’s inaction to curb attempts at desecration of religious structures.

Paroda temple desecration:Crime Branch sleuths nab 1
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, NOV 1

The Crime Branch today arrested one Razak Sheikh (25) resident of Shirvoi, Quepem in connection with the idol desecration reported recently at Mules-Paroda.

Sources in the Crime Branch said that Razak was picked up from his residence after enquiries revealed his involvement in the incident.

The police claim that they have enough evidence of his involvement but declined to disclose it.

Sources said the accused was still being interrogated and Crime Branch sleuths expect Razak to disclose names of his accomplices. It may be recalled that unknown vandals had desecrated idols and other religious articles at the Mahadev Temple and Satteri Temple in the early hours of October 18.

The incidents provoked public outrage in Quepem taluka and residents blocked roads at Gudi and Paroda along the Margao-Quepem route.

Earlier, unknown persons had also desecrated the Rakhandar at Uskiniarik, besides attempts to break into a temple atop Cancanamodi hillock in Cuncolim had also come to light. The case is being investigated by the Special Investigation Team of the Crime Branch.

Andhra PradeshSIT arrests 5 persons for murder

08 Nov 2008 HYDERABAD: Five persons were arrested Friday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing into the murder and attack on passersby by a mob at Nalgonda crossroads a week back.

The mob had gone on a rampage killing a motorist and damaging several vehicles after a petty quarrel with a history-sheeter, Raghavendra Goud alias Raghu. Cases under various sections were registered by the Chaderghat police and later transferred to the SIT under the Detective Department.

Investigations revealed that on the night, Mohammed Mahboob, a resident of Shahalibanda, along with his brother Yousuf Quadri, mother and sister went to Moosi hospital at Nalgonda crossroads to call on his sister-in-law, who was admitted there.

They were returning from the hospital when Raghu and his associate allegedly abused them without any reason.

When Mahboob objected, Raghu and his associate attacked him with stones and also kicked his mother in the stomach, an official release stated Friday.

When they ran into the hospital for shelter, Raghu broke the glasses of the hospital and threatened them with dire consequences. Mahboob, along with a mob of about 200 persons, came to Chaderghat police station and lodged a complaint against Raghu and his associate.

Raghu was arrested immediately and remanded.

Meanwhile, some persons, including Asif and Irfan, from the mob assaulted one Sridhar, a resident of Kaladera, opposite Chaderghat police station and damaged his two wheeler. The mob also damaged a four-wheeler belonging to P Janaiah of Borabanda.

The mob later rushed to the Yashoda hospital on coming to know that Raghu was present there in order to attack him.

As Raghu was not found there, the angry mob pelted stones on the police. In the process, Asif, Irfan and others attacked Bhagvan Gope and Dhanraj who were also moving on a two-wheeler in the vicinity of the petrol pump at Nalgonda crossroads, and killed Bhagwan Gope.

The SIT Friday arrested five of the accused — Mohammed Asif and Imran Ali Khan of Kaladera, Ahmed Ali Khan of Dabeerpura, Ateeq of Chanchalguda and Abdul Akram of Musanagar — under various sections including murder.

Sources said the accused had been identified with the help of images captured by the closed circuit television (CCTVs) installed at the petrol filling station where the murder took place.

Indonesia executes three Bali bombers
DPA  | Sunday, 09 November, 2008

Jakarta: Indonesia early Sunday executed three Muslim militants convicted for their roles in the 2002 bombings in Bali that killed 202 people, mostly foreigners, media reports said

Imam Samudra, 38 and brothers Amrozi, 46, and Ali Ghufron, alias Mukhlas, 48, were executed simultaneously by firing squads shortly after midnight on Saturday, Jasman Panjaitan, spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office said.

Landslides and floods in Java kill 101

The execution took place on Nusakambangan Island off the southern coast of Java where the men were being held, the TvOne channel said, citing an anonymous source.

The Detik.com online news service reported from the port town of Cilacap near Nusakambangan island that the bodies of the three men were brought to nearby clinic for autopsy after they were confirmed dead by doctors supervising the execution.

The report quoted an unnamed source as saying the bodies would be flown in by helicopter to the mens’ hometowns for burial.

The three convicts have been on death row since 2003, when a Bali court sentenced them to death for their roles in the bombing of nightclubs in tourist Kuta district.

None of the bombers has shown any remorse for the attacks.

In the hometowns of the Ghufrons in east Java district of Lamongan, as well as at Samudra’s residence in west Java’s Serang district town, dozens of their supporters shouted “Allahu Akbar!” (God is Great), witnesses said.

Hours before the execution, Ali Fauzi – the Ghufrons’ brother, arrived on Nusakambangan to take care of his brothers’ bodies.

Indonesian authorities repeatedly postponed plans to execute the three while their attorneys filed repeated legal appeals, including demands for a judicial review in a bid to delay their execution.

The three were members of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a regional terrorist network responsible for several bombings across Indonesia.

These included simultaneous church bombings on Christmas Eve 2000, bombings on Bali in 2002 and 2005, the bombing of the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2004 and an attack on the Australian embassy in 2005.
