Islamic scholars issue fatwa forbidding Muslim-Americans from using full-body airport scanners

BY Neil Nagraj  DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Friday, February 12th 2010

A body of North American Islamic scholars has issued a fatwa, or religious decree, forbidding Muslims from passing through the devices, the Detroit -Free Press reports, saying they violate the faith’s teachings on modesty.

“It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women,” the ruling, issued by The Fiqh Council of North America, states.

“Islam highly emphasizes haya (modesty) and considers it part of faith. The Quran has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts.”

Another Muslim group, The Council on American-Islamic Relations, backed the proclamation.

“We support the Fiqh Council’s statement on full-body scanners and believe that the religious and privacy rights of passengers can be respected while maintaining safety and security,” Nihad Awad, national executive director of CAIR, told the Detroit Free Press.

The machines at issue render a detailed outline of the scanned individual’s body that the Transportation Security Administration says is immediately destroyed.

The TSA says going through the scanners is “optional to all passengers.” Individuals can refuse the screening, the newspaper reports, and instead be patted down by a TSA guard.

The employment of full-body scanners has come under fire from civil libertarians, who say the devices are analogous to a strip search.

Deoband mulls fatwa against French goods protest the anti-burqa comments of French president Nicolas Sarkozy

Deoband mulls fatwa against French goods
25 Jun 2009, Manjari Mishra, TNN

LUCKNOW: The Islamic seminary of Dar-ul-Uloom Deoband is contemplating a fatwa against buying goods made in France to protest the anti-burqa  comments of French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Mufti Maulana Arshad Faruqui of Dar-ul-Ufba, the fatwa department of the seminary, said it would also call for a boycott of Sarkozy. “If necessary, an edict may be issued to all followers ordering them to shun French merchandise,” Maulana Faruqui said.

He said the comment was “one of the most shameful chapters of the mankind”. By labelling burqa, ‘naqab’ or ‘purdah’ as a symbol of female subjugation, the French president has “violated” the law of his own country, which guarantees its citizens the right to practice their religion unhindered, he added.

“The utterances are an evil ploy aimed at bringing disrepute to France.” Faruqui said the statement delivered in the French parliament reeks of a “conspiracy against Christianity too” as even Virgin Mary has always been painted or sculpted with her head covered.

Fatwa: Bangladeshi woman brutally whipped
IANS 29 Jun 2009

DHAKA: A widow was whipped 202 times and a man 101 times following a fatwa by a religious leader for their alleged involvement in “anti-social activity” in a village in southeastern Bangladesh, prompting local protests and action by the police.

Piara Begum, a widow of 40, and Mamun Miah, 25, were whipped before hundreds of people at Khaiyar in Comilla district Saturday night.

The woman fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital. Doctors said she was critically injured and needed to be given intensive treatment.

Miah was whipped 101 times, The Daily Star newspaper said Monday.

Punishment under a fatwa is held illegal as per a high court ruling of 2001 in Bangladesh that has a predominant Sunni Muslim population.

The police arrested six people, including Moulana Mohammed Manirul Islam, a religious leader working in the local madrassa.

Piara Begum filed a case with the Debidwar police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Muslim cleric bans music in West Bengal village

Music fatwa at home or out
The Telegraph, Calcutta

ALAMGIR HOSSAIN

Jangipur, Dec. 5: A maulana in Murshidabad has banned listening to music at home or in concerts and playing songs in public.

The “fatwa”, written in bold on walls on both sides of the approach road to Kanpur village in Raghunathgunj, bears the stamp of the local club and the Mazaar and Madarsa Committee.

“Music is prohibited in this village,’’ reads one.

From the tea stall owner to residents, everybody has been served with the notice, asking them not to play music or watch a dance performance on stage or on television.

Members of the Kanpur Nabajagaran Club are even visiting households to keep a check. The penalty for defying the order: Rs 1,000.

Lutful Sheikh, the secretary of the club, about 280 km from Calcutta, said Rajjak Sheikh, who deals in children’s toys at the local market, was fined for playing a CD in his shop.

A religious leader from Uttar Pradesh first imposed the ban. “Sayed Ahmed Kalimi from Katra Sharif in Shahjahanpur visits us every year being the peer sahib of our village and the head of the local madarsa. He imposed the ban in May,” the club secretary said.

Mohammad Safiullah, the head maulana of the village madarsa, said: “Shariyat does not permit Muslims to enjoy music.”

“I declared the fatwa after consulting the senior people of this village. In the past seven months no one has dared to challenge my directive but for one businessman,” Safiullah said.

Hyder Ali, a member of the Kanpur village panchayat, said: “The villagers have supported the fatwa as it has helped develop the moral character of the present generation. Present trends of music and other forms of entertainment affect the upbringing of a child.”

However, Sukhchand Sheikh, who owns a tea stall, said his business has suffered because of it. “I had a TV set in my stall and everybody enjoyed music and other programmes. Now that it is switched off, the number of customers has declined.”

The inspector in charge of the Raghunathgunj police station, Subhendu Banerjee, was, however, “not aware of any such fatwa”.

Fatwa against BSP’s ‘Jai Bhim’ slogan

Feb 08, 2009
Muzaffarnagar A leading Islamic seminary has issued a decree declaring the BSP slogan of ‘Jai Bhim’ as un-Islamic and violative of Shariat.

In the fatwa, the Dar-ul Uloom said that the slogan, invoking Dalit leader Bhimrao Ambedkar, was “against the Islamic law as the religion does not permit such a prayer for anyone except Allah”.

The fatwa was issued by chief Mufti Habibur Rehman, Mufti Mehmood and Mufti Zeulislam on Saturday on a query raised by a medico M Mehraj Khan, seminary sources said.

While the decree has sparked concern in the BSP, especially among its Muslim leaders, a cleric from the seminary Asad Madani who recently joined the party said that the slogan was not a “compulsion” for the party workers. Backing the fatwa, Madani said it was based on Shariat law.

Lucknow: A fatwa (decree) recently issued by Islamic seminary Dar-ul Uloom terming Bahujan Samaj Party’s slogan Jai Bhim as un-Islamic and violative of Shariat has evoked mixed reactions from different sections in Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 representatives to the Lok Sabha.

The fatwa issued by the Islamic seminary Dar-ul Uloom Deoband said that the BSP s slogan of invoking dalit leader Bhimrao Ambedkar, was “against the Islamic law, as the religion does not permit such a salutation for anyone except Allah.”

“The fatwa was issued by chief Mufti Habibur Rehman, Mufti Mehmood and Mufti Zeulislam on February 7 on a query raised by a medico M Mehraj Khan,” seminary sources said.

While the decree had caused a concern among the Muslim leaders of BSP, a cleric from the seminary Asad Madani, who had recently joined the party said the slogan was not a compulsion for the party workers and at the same time backed the fatwa saying, “It was based on Shariat law.”

Samajwadi Party leader and spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said, “the slogan of Jai Bhim has been forced on BSP leaders”.

Reacting to the fatwa, senior BJP leader Hriday Narayan Dikshit said, “Jai Bhim is simply a form of salutation. India is a democratic country and every citizen is free to use any form of salutation. It is really unfortunate that now fatwas are being issued on how people interact with each other.”

Pak clerics issue fatwa for Jehad if India attacks

January 06, 2009 14:41 IST

A group of clerics and religious scholars have issued a fatwa or edict that says Jehad will be obligatory for every Pakistani citizen if India attacks the country.

The fatwa was announced at a conference organised by the Tahaffuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat Mahaz at Jamia Naeemia seminary in Lahore  on Monday. The meeting, chaired by Federal Minister Noorul Haq Qadri, was arranged to discuss Pakistan’s security concerns.

Besides declaring that jehad would be obligatory for all Pakistanis in case of an attack by India, a communique issued by the clerics said the Pakistan government should end its support to the United States in its war on the western border in case of hostilities with India.

The conference demanded that Pakistan should shrug off the Indian pressure and adopt a courageous and independent stance befitting a sovereign state. The clerics called on the government to expose Indian conspiracies hatched against Pakistan before the world.

The communique said the clerics and scholars reaffirmed the belief that the basic purpose of Pakistan’s nuclear capability was to ensure the security of the country against any foreign aggression.

Fatwa against rascal Zakir Naik for supporting Islamic terrorist Osama bin Laden

Posted by jagoindia on November 8, 2008

Storm over fatwa against scholar Zakir Naik

Saturday, November 08, 2008  03:05 IST

LUCKNOW: A fatwa (edict) against well-known Islamic scholar Zakir Naik by a respected cleric here has divided the community.

The scholar has been charged with supporting al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden. The fatwa says his teachings are un-Islamic and contradict the Koran.

Naik, however, says he has been misquoted. “My speeches are being quoted out of context… I am being targeted by people with vested interests,” he told reporters.

Lucknow’s shahar qazi Mufti Abul Irfan Mian Firangi Mahali described Naik as a kafir (agnostic) in his fatwa, which states he should be ex-communicated from Islam.

“Zakir Naik is not an Islamic scholar. His teachings are against the Koran. In his speeches, he insults Allah and glorifies Yazeed, the killer of Imam Hussain,” Irfan told reporters. He said Naik had supported Laden and called upon all Muslims to become terrorists.

Noted Shia cleric Kalbe Jawwad told DNA: “Naik is bringing a bad name to Muslims. Such people should be condemned and socially boycotted.” He said Naik was being financed by the Wahabi sect that allegedly perpetrates violence in the name of religion.

“There should be an inquiry into how he is running a TV channel on his own. Where is he getting the funds from?” Jawwad said.

“Naik has just mugged up some verses from the Koran and pretends to be an Islamic scholar,” Lucknow’s Naib Imam Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali said.

However, Naik defends himself saying he had never supported Laden or glorified Yazeed. “People quote a certain part of my speech without referring to the context in which I said it,” he said. “I have said Muslims should become terrorists in the sense that they should strike terror in the hearts of criminals and anti-socials.”

“Such fatwas mean nothing. They should also issue fatwas against Imam Bukhari. Some clerics who have limited understanding of Islam are doing these things. It doesn’t affect me.”

On the other hand, Naik has got support from the All-India Sunni Board and Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani Foundation. “Naik is a respected scholar and he is trying to open the eyes of not only Muslims but people from all religions about the way the world sees Islam,” a board representative said.

Muslim gimmick: 6000 muftis to slap fatwa against terror

Posted by jagoindia on November 6, 2008

What is required is, not a fatwa against terror, but a fatwa against Islam, the ideological underpinning for Muslim terror.  Here are The Koran’s 164 Jihad Verses
6000 muftis to slap fatwa against terror
CITHARA PAUL

Mahmood Madani: Clearing the air
New Delhi, Nov. 3: Six thousand Muslim clerics are set to gather in Hyderabad on November 8 to issue the “biggest ever fatwa” against terror.

Organised by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, the country’s largest Islamic body, the meet will have muftis from all states condemning the propaganda that “regards terrorism as synonymous with jihad”.

The Jamiat, along with the Dar-ul Uloom Deoband, India’s oldest Islamic seminary, had issued a similar fatwa on May 31, the first of its kind in the country.

“The first fatwa was signed by only three muftis. This one will be signed by 6,000 muftis, which means the impact of this will be much larger and deeper,” Jamiat leader Maulana Mahmood Madani said.

The move comes in the wake of arrests of several Muslim youths in connection with a spate of recent blasts.

“We want to tell the whole world that Muslims are much better in India than in any other country despite certain shortcomings. Muslims elsewhere or here should have no confusion about that. This is the message we want to convey,” said Madani.

The Jamiat also plans to set up counselling centres in every district for Muslim youths who may “easily get carried away by sinister campaigns”.

Stressing its moderate position, Madani said: “It’s easy to spark hatred. But it will take years to calm it down.”

The November 8 meet will also issue a public declaration demanding a “strict anti-communal violence law”, uniform treatment of riot victims, reservation on the basis of population and implementation of the Ranganatha Mishra commission report that has recommended Scheduled Caste status for Dalit Muslims and Christians.

Wary of the alleged “pro-American tilt” of the UPA government, the Jamiat will ask the Centre to come clean on its stand on Palestine and Iraq. “The blatant pro-American position taken by the government of late is being viewed by the community with suspicion. The government will have to make its position clear,” said Madani.

Despite the accusation, the meeting should allow the Congress to breathe a sigh of relief. It has been facing flak from almost all leading Muslim groups for “targeting the community in the name of terror”. Some have even equated the Congress with the BJP, saying the parties were “two sides of the same coin”.

But the Jamiat said it still had faith in the Congress’s secular credentials. “The Jamiat doesn’t endorse comparing the Congress with the BJP. The Congress, despite its many shortcomings, is considered a secular party by most Muslims,” Madani said.

After fatwa on tomboys, Malaysia Muslim body targets yoga

Posted by jagoindia on October 29, 2008

After trousers, Malaysia Muslim body targets yoga
Wed Oct 29, 2008
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters Life!) – Not content with banning women from wearing trousers, Malaysia’s top Islamic council now wants a ban on yoga, according to a report on state news agency Bernama.

The National Fatwa Council’s Deputy Director-General Othman Mustapha told reporters after a seminar on Islamic jurisprudence on Thursday that the announcement would be made soon.

Professor Zakaria Stapa of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Islamic Studies Centre told the seminar on Wednesday that Muslims who had taken up yoga should stop practising as it could damage their faith, Bernama said.

Last week the Fatwa Council decreed that tomboyish behaviour by girls, including wearing trousers, was immoral as it may lead to the practise of lesbian sex.

Gay sex is prohibited in this country of 27 million people where over half of the population is Muslim.

Fatwa on yoga to be made known
By : Melissa Darlyne Chow

GEORGE TOWN: The National Fatwa Council will soon announce its stand on Muslims practising yoga, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia said.

Deputy director-general of operations Othman Mustapha, however, declined to reveal the details when approached after opening a seminar on “Fiqh and Sustainable Islamic Thinking” at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here yesterday.

It is learnt that the matter had been discussed at the council’s meeting in Kota Baru recently.

Othman was asked to comment on a statement by Professor Zakaria Stapa of the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, who stated that yoga’s origins could be traced back to Hinduism.

On Tuesday, Zakaria called on Muslims not to take up yoga and asked those already doing so to stop practising its art of meditation. He said practising yoga could cause Muslims to deviate from the teachings of Islam.

“I do not understand why Muslims would want to practise yoga for the purpose of finding serenity when Islam, through its teachings, enables its followers to do just that.

“Muslims should just practise what Islam has taught them,” he said after giving a lecture entitled “False Islamic Teachings in Malaysia”.

Malaysia Muslim body issues fatwa against tomboys
Fri Oct 24, 2008
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters Life!) – Malaysia’s top Islamic council has decreed that tomboyish behavior and lesbian sex are forbidden in Islam, a newspaper said on Friday.

The National Fatwa Council issued the edict following what it said a spate of cases involving young women behaving like men and indulging in lesbian sex, the Malay language Berita Harian daily said.

“There are teenage girls who prefer the male lifestyle including dressing up in men’s clothes,” it quoted council chairman Abdul Shukor Husin as saying. “More worryingly, they have started to engage in sexual activities.”

He gave no other details.

Mainly Muslim Malaysia frowns on oral and gay sex, describing them as against the order of nature. Under the civil law, offenders — both males or females — can be jailed for up to 20 years, caned or fined.

Just over half of Malaysia’s 27 million people are Malay Muslims, practicing the moderate brand of Islam.

Islamic leaders: Let’s have surrender policy for Muslim terrorists

Posted by jagoindia on October 17, 2008

Remember the Deobandi fatwa against terrorism. It did not work. Nor would this policy. For the same reason that they don’t treat the root of Islamic terrorism which is Islam itself. Click here. But moron Hindus would sure fall for such gimmicks.

Let’s have surrender policy for terrorists
Danish Khan

Admitting that the youth of their community had been led astray, top
intelligentsia and Islamic leaders have decided to press for a
‘surrender policy for boys who have strayed’ in a bid to bring them
back into the fold.

At a conference organised at the sea-facing ground of Islam Gymkhana
on Friday, prominent leaders, lawyers, educationists, Ulemas and
social workers of the Muslim community gathered to debate on
“Secularism and Terrorism”, during which they agreed in no uncertain
terms that the time had come for decisive action.

“We want a mechanism through which our boys who have strayed can be
taken into confidence and brought back home.

The authorities should draw up a plan for this,” said former minister
Nawab Malik, who set the tone of the meet.

Congress MLA Yusuf Abrahani said, “We have to accept that there are
certain youth from our community who have gone astray. But why and how
this is happening is a question which needs to be addressed urgently.”

Malik said, “In the early ’90s, when a lot of members left SIMI due to
a change in its working style, no policeman or intelligence officer
cared to find out the reasons.

“The boys who left the organisation openly said that Pakistan had
started taking an interest in the organisation and the boys are being
trained. But nobody from the police did anything,” said Malik.

A former housing minister in the state, Malik said the ISI could also
be blackmailing the youth. “The ISI is asking them (youths trained in
Pakistan) to carry out the attacks or else they would pass on their
details to the Indian government,” said Malik.

Maulana Zaheer Abbas, a prominent cleric, said while killing people is
no solution to any problem, the involvement of educated and
well-placed individuals shows they have no confidence in the
administrative mechanism.

“Maybe they are thinking that risking and sacrificing their lives is a
better option,” said Abbas.

“Let us raise our voice against terrorism. Mumbai crime branch chief
Rakesh Maria has said that many of the arrests would not have been
possible without the help of Muslims who supported the police in their
operations,” Abbas added.

Muzaffar Hussain, Congress MLC from Mira Road, chided the Urdu media
for focusing too much on international conflict.

“While the English press should be more responsible, the Urdu press
too should stop focusing on America, Israel, Pakistan, Hindustan,
Musalman and Kabrastran. There are other burning issues too,” he said.
