“My mother (Menaka Gandhi) has been elected to Lok Sabha from Pilibhit in seven consecutive elections, but the constituency has never witnessed a communal riot, not even in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement phase. But during the last one year, things have been different. Many of our people, including former minister Ram Saran Verma, have been arrested under the National Security Act,” he said.

Mr Varun Gandhi’s twin speeches in Pilibhit that riled the Election Commission and the Congress were surely no fine pieces of oration. They were meant for the consumption of the rustic Hindus of the outlying scenic district on the India-Nepal frontier. It might have outraged fine sensibilities but was lauded by the crowd. Was Mr Gandhi addressing the invisible malaise that is affecting the Hindus of Uttar Pradesh?

Recently a procession on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, or the Prophet’s birthday, turned violent resulting in clashes with Hindus in Bareilly. The police were helpless to stop the followers of the ‘religion of peace’ who had set fire to houses of Hindus by choosing a wrong route. Pilibhit, like Bareilly, is located in the region called Rohilkhand. Rohilkhand is named after the Rohilla Pathans whom Aurangzeb had imported from Afghanistan to check the Hindu intransigency in the area. Pathan warlords had committed violent atrocities on Hindus in the region during 1857, the so-called First War of Independence. Pilibhit also witnessed communal clashes in 1871, 1897, 1926, 1931, 1942, 1946, 1950, 1962, 1980, 1986 and 1992.

Today, Hindus across Uttar Pradesh are a bewildered lot. The growing number and political clout of local Muslims have left them befuddled. Even in the Congress era, until the fragmentation of the electorate on casteist lines in the 1980s and 90s, Hindus were a consolidated community. Its disintegration lulled Hindus but did not neutralise the assertiveness of Muslims. All political parties, despite having a Hindu at the helm of affairs, are perceived to be kowtowing to Muslim sentiments only. The BJP was quick to dissociate itself from the ‘toxic’ CD before the 2007 election in Uttar Pradesh, caring little that it had grains of truth about Islamists propagating jihad and cow slaughter, and carrying out counterfeit currency circulation.

Hindus have, thus, been left rudderless without a leader. Their plight is worse in western Uttar Pradesh. It is a volatile region where the community fears a bleak future for its coming generations.

Seen in this context Mr Varun Gandhi’s rough speech comes as an abrupt Hindu reaction. He might have got emotionally charged by inputs from Hindus in western Uttar Pradesh. Nonetheless, even though he has his detractors within the BJP — not to mention the Congress — he just might find supporters as well. But whether he owns up to his speech or dumps it as a faux pas is another thing.

Dhaka, October 8: A Hindu temple was torched and statues of deities were destroyed in three attacks on Muslim-majority Bangladesh’s main religious minority ahead of a festival, officials and reports said today.

In the northern area of Kishoreganj, a temple was set ablaze and badly damaged Saturday. A leaflet left behind called for an end to “idol worship” and for a mosque to be built in the temple’s place, the Sangbad newspaper reported.

One day later, a group destroyed statues of deities, made ahead of the major Hindu festival of Durga Puja on Thursday, in Narayanganj near the capital Dhaka.

A private guard identified as Shah Alam was arrested for the attack Sunday, police officer Ashadul Islam told AFP by telephone.

Separately, two teenagers were arrested for destroying idols in the western Natore district, Sangbad reported.

Opposition leaders have alleged persecution of Bangladeshi Hindus since Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Islamist-allied coalition swept in to power last October.

The government has denied any campaign against Hindus, who form about 12 percent of Bangladesh’s 130 million-strong population, and has assured full security for the festival Thursday.

The US State Department’s 2002 International Religious Freedom Report said Bangladeshis “generally are free to practice the religion of their choice,” but said police are often slow to assist minorities who are victims of crimes.

In the Narayanganj incident, local lawmaker Giasuddin Ahmed, who is from Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party, offered 40,000 taka (689 dollars) for the destroyed deities to be rebuilt.

Officials say two men in Iran stoned to death for adultery and murder

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) — Officials say two men in Iran have been stoned to death for adultery and murder, while another escaped death by digging his way out of the hole where he was buried to face a similar fate, according to media reports.

The sentences follow sharp criticism by human rights groups of Iran’s use of such punishments.

Judiciary spokesman Alireza Jamshidi on Tuesday told reporters about the stonings, which took place in the northeastern city of Mashhad about 20 days ago, the reports said.

According to the Mashhad prosecutor, the men committed various crimes, including adultery and murder, Jamshidi said.

In the practice, the men are buried up to their chests and people pelt them with stones until they die.

A third was supposed to have been stoned to death. However, he freed himself by climbing out of the stone hole. He still awaits punishment.

“Stoning is a horrific practice, designed to increase the suffering of those facing execution, and it has no place in the modern world,” Amnesty International said last year.

Jamshidi said Iran’s judiciary chief, Ayatollah Heshemi Shahroudi, had made recommendations that would ban the practice and said that a measure has been introduced in Parliament to stop the punishment.

But “until this measure is approved and becomes law, the judges have the independence not to pay heed to the recommendations of the Judiciary chief,” Jamshidi said.

Amnesty said in a report last year that Iran’s penal code allows execution by stoning as the penalty for adultery. The group said the law calls for stones “large enough to cause pain, but not so large as to kill the victim immediately.”

In August, Amnesty International issued a statement welcoming an announcement that stoning had been suspended and several women had their sentences commuted.

In that announcement, the group said at least one stoning execution was carried out in 2007 in Qazvin province and a woman and a man were known to have been stoned to death in Mashhad in May 2006.

“The majority of those sentenced to death by stoning are women. Women are not treated equally with men under the law and by courts, and they are also particularly vulnerable to unfair trials because their higher illiteracy rate makes them more likely to sign confessions to crimes they did not commit,” Amnesty said. end

Stoning victim ‘begged for mercy’

A young woman recently stoned to death in Somalia first pleaded for her life, a witness has told the BBC.

“Don’t kill me, don’t kill me,” she said, according to the man who wanted to remain anonymous. A few minutes later, more than 50 men threw stones.

Human rights group Amnesty International says the victim was a 13-year-old girl who had been raped.

Initial reports had said she was a 23-year-old woman who had confessed to adultery before a Sharia court.

Numerous eye-witnesses say she was forced into a hole, buried up to her neck then pelted with stones until she died in front of more than 1,000 people last week.

Meanwhile, Islamists in the capital, Mogadishu have carried out a public flogging.

Mogadishu is nominally under the control of government forces and their Ethiopian allies, who face frequent attacks by Islamist and nationalist insurgents.

The BBC’s Mohammed Olad Hassan in the city says the flogging was a show of strength.

He says two men accused of helping to kill a man and torture his mother, who they accused of theft, were each given 39 lashes in the north-eastern suburb of Suqa-hola.

The man who actually killed the alleged thief was released, after agreeing to pay his family 100 camels in compensation.

Before the flogging, hundreds of Islamist fighters performed a military parade, our reporter says.

Death threats

Cameras were banned from the stoning in Kismayo, but print and radio journalists who were allowed to attend estimated that the woman, Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow, was 23 years old.

However, Amnesty said it had learned she was 13, and that her father had said she was raped by three men.

When the family tried to report the rape, the girl was accused of adultery and detained, Amnesty said.

Convicting a girl of 13 for adultery would be illegal under Islamic law.

A human rights activist in the town told the BBC on condition of anonymity that he had received death threats from the Islamic militia, who accuse him of spreading false information about the incident.

He denies having anything to with Amnesty’s report.

‘Crying’

Court authorities have said the woman came to them admitting her guilt.

She was asked several times to review her confession but she stressed that she wanted Sharia law and the deserved punishment to apply, they said.

But a witness who spoke to the BBC’s Today programme said she had been crying and had to be forced into a hole before the stoning, reported to have taken place in a football stadium.

“More than 1,000 people arrived there,” he said.

“After two hours, the Islamic administration in Kismayo brought the lady to the place and when she came out she said: ‘What do you want from me?'”

“They said: ‘We will do what Allah has instructed us’. She said: ‘I’m not going, I’m not going. Don’t kill me, don’t kill me.’

“A few minutes later more than 50 men tried to stone her.”

‘Checked by nurses’

The witness said people crowding round to see the execution said it was “awful”.

“People were saying this was not good for Sharia law, this was not good for human rights, this was not good for anything.”

But no-one tried to stop the Islamist officials, who were armed, the witness said. He said one boy was shot in the confusion.

According to Amnesty International, nurses were sent to check during the stoning whether the victim was still alive. They removed her from the ground and declared that she was, before she was replaced so the stoning could continue.

The port of Kismayo was seized in August by a coalition of forces loyal to rebel leader Hassan Turki, and al-Shabab, the country’s main radical Islamist insurgent organisation.
Mr Turki is on the US list of “financers of terrorism”.

It was the first reported execution by stoning in the southern port city since Islamist insurgents captured it.

The BBC had a reporter in the area, but he was shot dead in Kismayo in June.

Unhone media mein perception management bahut acchha kiya . Indians ne wahi game repeat karne ki koshish ki, lekin akal to hai nahin . In ahmakon ne complete disaster kiya isko handle karne mein . (The Americans executed the 9/11 attack perfectly. They managed the media very well. The Indians tried to repeat the formula but goofed up. The idiots made a complete mess of it).

He said that the attackers wore saffron Hindu Zionist bands, which no Muslim would tie. Hamid also said that within the first 5 minutes of the attack, the three ATS policemen investigating the network of terror within India’s security agencies and radical right were killed.

That ensured that those investigations reach a dead end. Anchor Qudsia Qadri added that with their killings, the investigations into the Samjhauta Express carnage would be halted. The killings also immediately shifted attention from India’s domestic terrorists to Pakistan, said Hamid.

Marvi Memon, glamorous Pakistan Muslim League member, on the same programme, was appalled at the Pakistan government’s expansion of the “India-appeasement package” by initially agreeing to send ISI chief to India. “I just don’t get it,” she exclaimed in exasperation.

She wondered how can you send the ISI chief to a ” mulk jiske sath jang chal raha hai …at a different level…,” mentioning Kashmir and accusing India of blocking Pakistan’s waters. Memon said, “They (Indians) are quite obsessed with anti-Pakistan speak and that unites them,” she said. Memon also spoke about India’s separatist movements and believed that India was only reaping the bitter harvest of the poisonous seeds it had sowed.

Blogger daily.pk writes in pakalert.wordpress.com, “India has been relapsing into religious extremism and numerous separatist movement have mushroomed due to official patronage …I see the Mumbai bombings as the desperate move of separatists who want to blame everything on Muslims.”

It’s not only random voices railing against fingers pointing to Pakistan. Blogger and journalist Farrukh Khan Pitafi is miffed. “For years I have been advocating peace between India and Pakistan,” he wrote. But he, too, says that India was out of its mind in naming Pakistan as the source of violence without identification of the perpetrators.

He wrote: “During such a long coverage of the mishap not a single outlet pointed out that Hemant Karkare… was the same man whose dismissal was Narendra Modi’s biggest demand. Or that he was the man on the verge of uncovering the home-grown terror franchise of the Hindu extremists. No channel mentioned Colonel Purohit once during the live telecast, no not even CNN, BBC or CBS. It is sad.”
