MANGALORE/AZAMGARH: In a well-coordinated move, police and security forces in two states raided houses of terror suspects and busted a support cell o
f Indian Mujahideen in Mangalore arresting four of its members on Friday.
The special forces nabbed Mohammed Ali (56) from Mukkacheri, Ullal, a real estate agent; Javed Ali (20), a student of Ullal Quranic College; Naushad (25) from Subash Nagar, Pandeshwar, a construction worker; and Ahmed Bava (33) from Haleyangadi, Mulky, a petty shop owner. They also detained six others for questioning.
The arrested men may be taken to Mumbai on Saturday for questioning, IGP (Western Range) Ashit Mohan Prasad and SP Satheesh Kumar said.
The first to be picked up were Mohammed Ali and his son Javed, from whom police seized computers, two mobile handsets and material on jihad. Based on information given by Javed, Naushad was arrested. Naushad led the cops to the house of Riyaz Bhatkal, against whom the Mumbai police have issued a nation-wide alert. Five grenades and improvised pipe bombs were seized along with 12 mobile handsets, SIM cards and jihadi material at Subhash Nagar. Riyaz Bhatkal was away at the time of the raid.
Naushad also led police to the house of Bhatkal’s accomplice Mudassar (24), where a laptop, a hard disk, Rs 11.39 lakh in cash, five mobile handsets, passports, CDs and jihadi material were recovered. Ahmed Bava was also picked up on Naushad’s information. Prasad told TOI that intelligence had zeroed in on IM presence in Mangalore after a month-long investigation. He added that bombs for blasts in other places in the country may have been supplied from here.
The police are now busy tying up loose ends like the banks used for cash transactions, where did the funds come from and flow towards, etc. Prasad said experts would analyze the computer hard disks. He hoped a lot of information could be gleaned through analysis of documents seized.
Kumar said electronic photo identity cards (EPICs) were used as identity proofto procure SIM cards. The police also seized three passports belonging to Yasin Haji Razak Pothwala (55), Mafusa Yasin (53), both from Gujarat, and Syed Mohammed Irshad (55) from Koondapur. Kumar said they have to verify if these passports were genuine. One EPIC is in the name of Raj Gangwal (19), whose address has been listed as B-606, Sangam Vihar, New Delhi.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Police led by API Crime Branch Nand Kumar Gopale cracked down on the house of Abu Rashid son of Akhlaq Ahmad in Sanjarpur, in Azamgarh district of UP on Friday. However, no arrest could be made as Rashid proved untraceable.
Sanjarpur was earlier raided by a team of Delhi police and the district police on September 23 in search of Delhi blasts suspects. Official sources claimed that Mumbai team had wanted to interrogate Rashid in connection with Mumbai train blasts on July 11, 2006. The man, it is suspected, had planted bombs on the local trains that left a trail of destruction. Rashid, who originally belongs to Sanjarpur in Sarai Mir, seems to have covered his trail well.
